"Twas the Night Before Christmas, TBRI® Style

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the town

Worn out adoptive parents felt like they might drown.

The rages and meltdowns filled their homes with dread

The wife and I thought, let’s escape for a cruise instead.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with a glare

Because the feelings of tender care had gone somewhere.

Mom knows it should be a happy time of year

Yet these problems were filling her heart with fear.

The children weren’t nestled all snug in their beds

They were screaming and crying in mine instead.

And Mama in her kerchief and I in my cap

Couldn’t remember our last peaceful nap.

When out on the roof I heard such a clatter

I sprang from my bed to see which child might splatter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash

Reached out just in time to prevent a big crash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave hope that perhaps there was still more to know.

The parenting books lined my shelves filled with dust

Perhaps the key is to do what’s in them, I must!

No little ol’ driver lively and quick

Trust-based parenting - it is the trick.

No reindeer were following a little old man

It was time for me to stick with my plan.

Come on, eye contact, matching, and sensory play

It’s time I make room for you each and every day.

The proactive strategies must fill my life for a while

So Mom can return to our lives with a smile.

You think Dancer and Prancer would help in your case

But role-play and nurture must take their place.

To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall

Let’s practice and practice for the sake of us all.

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly

Fear met with “felt safety” will head for the sky

It takes much time, I won’t tell you a lie

But it’s worth it if you’ll just give it a try.

In more than a twinkling, I heard in my home

The spirit of Christmas whisper a familiar tone.

As I turned my head with a gleam in my eye

My wife stood close by with a tear in her eye.

"It was worth it." she said, "all the work and the pain

Our children have learned and are making great gain."

It wasn’t eight reindeer pulling a sleigh

But a trust-based model has paved the way.

I spoke not a word, but went straight to my knees

God brought us Miss Karyn with lots of strategies

But what He really taught us through grit and sheer guts

Was there was stuff in our history that was making us nuts.

So deal with your past and you can live in the present

Get on with your life and the joy of advent.

This Christmas may be filled with hyper kids and teens

But a secure parent can nurture even the tweens.

This parent trainer and her hubby are taking a rest

To regroup and revive for their next big quest.

We’re praying your worries soon drift out of sight

Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!
